What is Choice-Based Art?

Choice-based art education stems from a grassroots organization called Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB). It is characterized by student driven art-processes and ideas and teachers who facilitate an organized, resource filled, responsive environment in the classroom. For more information about TAB you can visit their website at:

However, while I have read much of the material produced by this organization, I employ a variety of methods in my classroom. Teaching is (or should be) responsive, much in the same way that the process of art-making is. I make it my mission to provide space and opportunities for artistic growth in my students. This might include teaching various art techniques, brainstorming with them for art ideas, making them aware of design principles present in their work, and giving guidance for improvement. In short, my job in to be as interested in their creative efforts as they are.
